about

This song was the reason I decided that I needed to find back up singers. I wrote it in a cabin in western New York . I’ve stayed in that cabin several times while on tour heading towards or away from NYC. It belongs to some great folks who attend a church in Jamestown where I almost always stop in and play a quick Sunday afternoon show while I’m on tour in the area. This particular time I was enjoying the beautiful reds, yellows, oranges and browns of the trees across the lake in mid-October when I realized I needed to write a song for my friend Greg. He had just moved away from Chicago to Brooklyn and I wanted to tell him how much I missed him. We’d known each other since high school in the small town in Northern Michigan where we grew up- and he LOVED a good country tune. So, I wrote him this one. It was finished within a few hours and is one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written. I sang it for him when I got to Brooklyn. It’s a beautiful moment when you get to sing a song you’ve written FOR someone TO them for the first time.

When it was time to leave town to finish up the rest of that tour, driving away from New York with the black clouds of Hurricane Sandy in my rearview mirror was one of the hardest drives of my life. When I got home I immediately reached out to my little sister Rebecca, and a girl from church who I barely knew- Charity Luce. I knew they both had beautiful voices and the first song I taught them was Last Night. Hearing their soulful harmony, seeing their chemistry, and feeling the elation of a song I already loved becoming something much more enthralling and delicious, changed my life. I am so thankful for each time I get together to sing with these ladies.

Recording this tune was a complete delight. I knew that of the 5 songs on this record- this was the vocal jewel. This is where ‘Abbi Rajasekhar TRIO’ would shine the most. So, we kept the arrangement simple, taking cues from (recurring theme for Jordan and I) The Everly Brothers, Dolly Parton, and Raising Sand by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. Our good friend, Todd Seely, was able to pop by the house and record a pedal steel feature on this song that I’m completely enamored with. I had no idea how fiendishly difficult that instrument is and I’m no longer surprised that so few people know how to play it and even fewer can play well. Its an incredible skill that I will always admire when I an expert technician.

lyrics

Last night you said you had some news, somehow I already knew
Whatever you had to say would end up in goodbye
So when you came over and said you where going
I tried so hard to fake that smile
Because I hadn’t seen you that happy in quite a while

Now it wasn’t the first time, we’d whispered away the night
You’d go on all about some far off distant place
You’d get that look in your eye, and smile and sigh
And say some day you’d take that ride
But I never believed you’d go until last night

CHORUS:Cause I could see it in your eye you were already leaving
I could hear it in your voice you were already gone
That was the moment when last night became this morning
That was the moment I knew I was gonna be all alone

Last night under the moon, you told me you’d be leaving soon
You couldn’t wait to pull up all your roots
So I took your hand and listened to your plans
there was nothing else to do
I was losing you, losing you
